The New Legends of Monkey season 2

Sometimes, it is just great and watch a new show, drenched in good old nostalgia.

And that was something me and Noshi had with the first season of Monkey, so we happily binged season 2 as well.

You see, while it is a clearly low budget affair, and has some serious dodgy acting, the series is giving off such a huge Xena vibe from our youth years that we can just enjoy it for what it is, and not think we are going to see the next Game of Thrones or Sopranos level series.

In this second season, Monkey, Tripitaka, Pigsy and Sandy continue their auest to find the scroll of Creation, but the demon overlords step into the fray to stop them.  One in particular, a puppetmaster called Hagfish, steps up to be the main antagonist, even going as far as controlling the other demon lords, as well as cloning Monkey himself into a shadow version.  One that can only be defeated by making the ultimate sacrifice!

Will there be a third season?  Who knows in this year of Covid 19 and subsequent budget and production cuts amongst many a series.  But if there is, we will definitly be watching it once again!

At 10 episodes of 25 minutes each, it's a fast paced story, yet this is just long enough for the episodes to keep their appeal and go for that "just one more" in the couch...

Desecration: Zarbag's Gitz vs Fomoroid Crusher solo batrep

Zarbag and his mates are back for another go against the Fomoroid Crusher (which again looks suprisingly Mordor Trollish, I really should order him soon before Brexit comes into play) in the second of the three solo scenarios from A Crushing Terror.

And this time, at first glance, it looks like they are in for a rough day again!

In order to Inspire for the goblins (bar the Fanatic and the Squigs), one needs to get three Glory Points, but they can`t score those in these sologames, OR an objective needs to be destroyed by the Crusher.  But with three objectives on the board, and the game ending once those are gone, that means two regular gobbos only can Inspire...

Setting up the table, I`m forced to already sacrifice two goblins, and went for the archers.  This is because in the second scenario, the first action (actually his activation actions third from the four) he will take is Breaker, which causes an instant three damage to one model in contact.  In the first turn I`ll go with a random roll, but after that it will be the model with the highest damage causing potential that will be on the receiving end.

The Crusher himself inspires once he can destroy an objective, so I`ll be throwing gitz against him piecemeal in order to keep him locked in place, and hopefully do some points of damage left and right before both his hit points and defence statistic increases.

The cards are drawn (with Pit Trap being useless, so that one will be turned in at the end of round 1) and under a loud bellowing, the game is underway.

Round 1

With a mighty smash, Stikkit is immediatly reduced to a pulp by the Crusher, causing 3 damage on the little goblin.  In the ensuing Power phase, Little Waagh is played, as are the Madcap Mushrooms.

Snirk then activates, but not Inspired, as he has a 3 damage attack.  He charges in and with the Little Waagh in play he manages to cause a critical hit and bypass the Crusher's rule of 2 damage maximum per attack action, causing 3 wounds on the big beast.
The Fomoroid then activates again and uses Breaker on poor Snirk, but in a reaction the Fungal Blessing caused another wound.  This means the poor guy actually knocked off 4 of the 10 wounds from the beast!

Drizgit now activates and charges in, and also manages to hit for 2 wounds.  The Fomoroid seems to be in a hard place as his Breaker action only takes down one git at a time, and they keep to lock him in place.  That said, he breaks Drizgit in very small pieces, but this Inspires the two squigs and now there are two bouncing balls of teeth eyeing him, and with Cleave to boot!

The first of them, Gobbaluk, immediatly goes for his ankles and takes a good chomp out of them before he gets flattened himsef, but the monster might actually go down in the first round of the game as it only has two wounds left!

It might come down to the other squig, Bonekrakka, who ferociously bounces in, but will he be able to finish the Crusher as the dice are rolled and...

... YES, they succeed as the Crusher goes down, it's final two wounds bitten away together with his face!

A suprisingly easy victory for the Gitz, even though every action of the Fomoroid smashed one into a pulp without any chance for the plucky warriors.  But in this scenario, where the Crusher doesn`t has his whirlwind like action, keeping him locked in place to prevent him from reaching the objectives does work wonders.
That is, if your dice co-operate, because if you fail to wound him with your higher damage output warriors before they are smashed, things might turn very, very different!

But a short, yet brutal game and good fun all in all, and this concludes my triumvirate of Underworlds posts this week, with a painted warband, an unboxing and now this battle report.

Until the next game!

Unboxing Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven

Ever since this Daughters of Khaine warband was teased for season three of Warhammer Underworlds, Beastgrave, I just wanted to have it.

Because face it, who doesn`t want to play (pun intended) with a bunch of goth girls in steel bikini's?

Now, Covid hit and not only was their release pushed back, it also wrecked the WHU event calendar, so it is even doubtfull as it stands I can get them into season 3, let alone season 4.  On the plus side, ever since Beastgrave the "unique" cards, aka those that don't cycle out, are really top of the line to allow bands an even longer lifespan without rebuilding decks from zilch, at most a card or two to cycle out...

The box comes with some gorgeous art work at the front (though the poor fifth girl is seemingly forgotten), while the back features the contents in glorious technicolor.

Opening the box, we get the two sprues, molded in a deep purple, which contains all the parts for the warband models, as well as the clear assembly guide.

The models are push-fit, but never the less I went to war on them with my faithfull Revell Contacta Professional, the best friend of every plastic kit to be assembled!

As such I assembled the models, and once again impressed by the very high quality of the casts.  Don`t be to brutal though cutting the parts of the sprues, being elves their armes and such are on the thinner side and a bit fragile if you use to much force!

I especcially like the Hag Queen herself, as well as her slithering companion, but perhaps the best model for me is the lowly warrior bending through her knees as to jump forward and slid your throat!

There are two packs of cards in the boxed set, one being the unique cards for the warband, containing not only the warrior cards themselves, but also ploys, upgrades and objectives.  The artwork on them is once again of a high quality, depicting the girls.

The second pack is the universal cards one, that can be fitted into all other warbands as long as the season permits it for matched play, but of course that isn`t an issue for your casual games!

I really think these Expansion packs, coming in around 25 euro, are great value for money considering all the contents: a warband of usually between 3 to 6 models (of course, there are exceptions, I`m looking at you Zarbag!) and about 60 high quality cards for deckbuilding.

So yes, an great release and I can`t wait to paint them up and field them on the table!

If you want one of your own, why not check out the Affiliate banner at the top of this blog, as Wayland Games offers a great discount on your shopping, and who doesn`t like discounts (though not as much as psycho emo bikini girls!)

Steelheart's Champions

One of the very first Underworlds warbands released, as they where in the Starter set for Shadespire, Steelheart's Champions brings you three mighty Stormcast Eternals to explore the ancient ruins.

And now, only about three years after release, I finally painted them up...

Containing of the mighty Severin Steelheart himself, the shield carrying Angharad Brightshield (back then, the first female Stormcast released ever) and the huge hammer wielding Obryn the Bold, this is a very defensive and immovable warband.

It also shows in their Inspired condition that they are all about the blocking game, ideal to put themselves on objectives and rake in the points by guarding them like the immovable fortresses they are.  With their high hit points, they do a good amount as damage as well so it really isn't easy to shift them once they are in position.

I went on and painted them in a beige colourscheme, with a turquoise clothing for contrast.  This definitly looks better then the, no offense, boring gold of the Stormcasts, a colourscheme as widespread as Ultramarines.  Nothing wrong with that, but with an "army" of three models I just wanted something radically different.

I also went for white stonework on the bases, painted around a purple washed light grey to give it some arcane feeling to the rubble, and due to it being a cold colour compared to the warmer one of their armour, still stands out nicely and not becoming a white / bone blob.

Great models for sure, and one of these weeks I think I'm going to throw them against the Crusher in the soloplay rules for Underworlds, I'lll see about that.

But anyways, that now means I completed the third of the eight warbands Noshi and me share, so slowly it will all get done.

Slowly...

XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero

The newest addition for my MechaTop collection, this time it's the Wing Gundam Zero from the Gundam Wing series.

Like those before him, it is a repainted gasaphon (capsule toys in soft plastic) by BanDai.

The Wing Gundam Zero made it's appearance during the second part of the series, build by Quatre but in the end piloted by Heero, as a follow up to his Wing Gundam mobile suit.  Equipped with the ZERO system that links on a mental level with it's pilot, it was one of the only two suits (the other being Epyon) that used this highly advanced system.

The model as such has been repainted from it's monotone coloured plastic it came in, adding more detail and panelling as a result to make it stand out better and just, well, look far better.  In scale 1/400 it has the same size as a regular 28mm figure, and goes well to game with all the 1/300 scale terrain I`ve been building the past months.

I hope to soonish try out MechaTop in solo mode as a result, and this guy is high on the list to be the main hero suit for the game...

The Haul Report 254

Happy Halloween!

This might sound odd a week after the facts, but it just a good intro for the first stack of hauling I had this week, as I made use of the Halloween sale by 3D Hexes.

I really fell in love with his simple to print, supportless models, and wanted the Leaf Village bundle as it looks just to cute.

So I grabbed it, and yeah, in the spree I also grabbed the Lion Towers, Tranquility Shrine and Mother Tree from his webstore...

This will add some nice things to the gaming table once printed and painted!

More files where obtained as the last part of the Castle Dracul from Dark Realms Patreon fell in my inbox.

Talking about printing, I started on a new project for Rangers of Shadow Deep, in that I will need to print and paint no less then 40 of these wall sections.  I told about it in last battle report, it was either these or about 150 dungeon tiles, and the latter would just take to long before I'd be able to game again.  Which doesn't mean I'm printing some more up inbetween for scenario 3 of the mission.

I also printed a new batch of 6mm scenery, as Project Far Side will get a boost again in the coming weeks on a painting level.

So a whole week of printing loot only, that's budget friendly in these locked down days...

Crisis 2020: the non-report

Well, it's a sad saturday for this little hobby pony...

Normally, I would by now be shifting through a trainload of pictures and be in the process of writing up my after convention report, every year my "top post" basically.

Alas, not so in this Covid 19 ridden year.  TSA took the decision past april to cancel the show, as to be expacted and has been the fate for so many conventions and tournaments around the globe in 2020.  And if you read on Facebook groups, or forums like LAF, things don't look to bright for 2021 either.
For example, the traditional year opener here in Belgium, WarCon, has been cancelled already, as have several scalemodel events.  And recent rumours seem to suggest Salute 21 is already on the wire...

But there is even more that makes it extra sad for me (and probably a lot of continental european hobbyists), in that this years Crisis would be the last big chance for a wild shopping spree before Brexit hits.  Working in a high valuables sector that often deals with the United Kingdom, and the fact a Non-deal Brexit is really certain for now, makes that import duties and taxes are going to hit rockhard come 1st of january.
While differing for every country of course, for us Belgians the UK now comes in the same "class" as the USA, Hong Kong and the likes: 33% of the total amount if the value is above 22 euro.  Not only is there that, but meaning to go through customs now will mean delays, opened (and damaged!) goods, and the inevitable losses.

This all means I am spending my saved Crisis budget now on what I have become to call "the last round of mail orders", with my Games Workshop and Forge World orders made less then an hour ago of writing this.  Because adding 33% to an already not cheap line of figures would make it really nasty in price.  The reason I'm doing it already, is that in a week or three, the chrostmas online craze will start, add to that the Black Friday deals coming, and to THAT the lockdowns in place everywhere making people online shop even more...  Needless to say, come the second week of december, chances are real your orders will go beyond that 1st of january deadline...

So yes, this has been a sad hobby saturday for sure, and I for one hope on the one side that Crisis 2021 will take place as the Covid pandemic has been quelled.  But I look also forward in curiosity on how the landscape of the wargame manufacturer will be changed by Brexit, not only on price ranges, but on how the smaller companies will circumnavigate the extra work to get to mainland shows, and if it still is viable then for them.  And if not, how the "gaps" will be filled in from mainland europe traders and what this will mean for the ranges on offer, because there is a strong difference in offered products and gamestyles between the continent and the UK in my opinion...

But that is perhaps something for another Opinions post in the future!

On the Painting Desk 168

Work progresses this week on the Underworlds warband as I do a little every early morning, about half an hour before baby Thorin's morning bottle and leaving for work.

So at this rate, I hope to complete them during november.

On paint station Beta, aka the dining table, in the meantime, good progress was made on some walls and ruins that where printed last week.

Not to bad at all for a busy week, and let's see what we get done in the coming days!

A 3D printed River

Printed with the next scenario of Rangers of Shadow Deep in mind, I went on and printed myself a river on the Ender 3.

The files themselves are from Thingiverse, and I went for the straight sections of 20cm each, and two smaller 10cm ones including one with a fording.

The river was painted up with Amsterdam acryllics, lovely stuff for terrain works.

Now, this all means I now have 1m80 of river sections, good enough for the scenario.  Over time I will be adding some bends and such to the collection, but that isn`t a priority at the moment at all.
