Okay, so this was one of those "accidental finds" while browsing, and I must say I didn't regret it.
The fun thing is, this movie is mostly depicted... by narrated ballet!
During the bombings of England in 1940, children of an orphanage are forced into a bomb shelter during the night. Their teacher, Miss Shaw (who narrates the whole movie) grabs a book to tell them the fantastic story of Light and Darkness and the struggle between the two.
At first there was Darkness (represented by Modern ballet), but one day Light appeared (who uses Classic ballet). Darkness is intrigued by him, but can't get hold of him as he leaves again. Soon after, she gives birth to children, spawned from their conflict: Yellow, Red, Blue, Violet, Green, Orange and Indigo, the seven colours led by Yellow (whom combine both styles).
As with Light, she tries to get a hold and absorb them, but initially fails. Yet by luring Yellow into an apathic state with the aid of the newly made Shadows, she one by one tries to overcome the others. Putting aside their petty squables, the Iris Warriors gather together and overcome her. They unite into the Sun, a glowing orb that brings hope every day, and keeps Darkness at bay as a result, preventing her from taking everything over and plunge it in eternal darkness.
While this might not seem to much as a plot, and it is a short movie at 1hr15, it is so worth the watch. The score is phenomenal, and the ballet is a beauty on the eye, and the story is actually more layered then it first seems to be. Add to that the fact of the children and their teacher huddles away under the bombings, it draws a parallel with the RAF appearing to drive off the German bombers during the telling of the tale.
Certainly worth a watch!
