Chappie

A few weeks ago, this 2015 sci-fi movie was the saturday night entertainment for me and Noshi as they gave it on public television here.

Made by Neill Blomkamp of District 9 fame, and with a strong cast with Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver, we sat down with high expectations.

In the city of Johannesburg, crime numbers are skyrocketing.  In order to combat these, the police force deploys a squad of robot policemen to take out the gangs.  But one of them, Chappie, is tolen as a project to serve as a new artificial intelligence that mimics human behaviour.

He is however taken over by a group of low level criminals, who want to train him as a gangster to help them out paying an inmountable debt to a crime lord.  When his creator and his mother figure are both killed in a firefight, Chappie goes rampant in order to restore his maker in the body of another robot, while his former gangcollegue restores his fallen friend in a robot resembling her.

The movie isn't bad, but it didn't really fullfil my expectations.  I felt the end just a bot to far fetched as it has, like District 9, a happy but not happy ending sort of finale.

So all in all, I'd say it is a mediocre fling, good to watch on the couch, but it won't sweep you away...
