Warcry: Monsters and Mercenaries

The skirmish game of Age of Sigmar, Warcry is a game I have been reading nothing but excellent comments about.

Seemingly it is "up there" in ruledesign with MESBg and classic Necromunda, so that is saying something.   I haven't gotten round to playing a game or even reading through the big core rulebook, but I did finish this smaller expansion book, Monsters and Mercenaries.

And the title is of course a good hint what it is all about...

Apart from some more Fated Quests, this book contains rules and stats for big monsters to add to the game, as well as how to include allies.  These are often characters from the army lists, and I for one have painted up that Tidecaster near the end of last year just for this, to include it initially in a Warcry band, and then start building an army from there.

The Fated Quests can be undertaken by every warband, and if it are the "unique" warbands for the game that domonate it, thralls can be gained as well by doing so.  They all 4 contain multiple scenarios to be undertaken, and the results influence the final result and the rewards the warband can reap from undertaking the quest in search of honour and glory.

Next up is a section called Challenge Battles, in which your opponent in a campaign game isn't controlling his own warband, but a selection of adversaries bent on thwarting you achieving your goal.  The rewards are granted to your band, but beware as the opponent does not have to safeguard his troops, able to go for all out carnage, so beware before issuing the challenge!

Then we get the whole list of allies, containing various choices for all bands, and starting with the list of thralls and monsters.  This brings variation to the table, from the humble Chaos Warhound to the mighty Ghorgon!

The allies generally can be included on a one per band basis, though there are some exceptions like in Narrative play.  They have a slightly different runemark, meaning they can't use the abilities of your warband and vice versa, and their runemark can't be the one selected for fated quests.

Though a few bands only have a single choice, most got a wider range of warriors to choose from, so yes, there is plenty on offering here for the warbands that hail from Age of Sigmar armies (so mind you, not for example for your Poisoned Fang warband and such specifically, though they CAN include models due to the runemarks).

A nicely presented book for sure, and while I'm catching up on the rules, I must say it indeed looks promising with the abilities and all.

I'm looking forward at least to learn more of this game, and hopefully get some games in this year!
