It had been rumoured for years, but finally it happened, Patrick Stewart retook his role of Jean-Luc Picard, perhaps the best captain portrayal in the whole of the Star Trek franchise.
And it soom becomes clear this is a different Star Trek altogether...
Now retired in France, Jean-Luc is visited by a girl named Dahj, who turns out to be Data's daughter and a cybernetic lifeform. But a lot has happened since the attempted rescue of Romulus at the supernova, and the outlawing of cybernetic lifeforms has been one of them after they rebelled and destroyed Utopia Planitia Shipyards.
But there turns out to be a twin sister, and in order to learn more about the final fate of his former friend, he sets out to save her. But Starfleet, infiltrated by an organisation even darker in Romulan society then the Tal Shiar and bend on destroying all artificial life, tries to thwart his every move.
This forces Picard to gather a crew of washouts and outlaws, and set out to once more save the galaxy as it all turns out deeper then expected.
Oh, and we get to learn what happened to Voyager's Icheb in the process, as well as meeting up with familiar faces like Riker, Soong, Hugh and Seven.
A very good series that sets a rather special tone as how the Federation and Star Fleet have evolved over the two decades since we last visited this continuity (the beginning story of the Abramsverse to be precise) but yet it feels all to familiar never the less.
Recommended, even for a non-Trekkie!
