While strolling through the Netflix catalogue, Noshi and me bumped onto this odd looking Fantasy series, and decided to give it a go.
Consisting of 10 episodes of about 25 mins each, this isn`t to long of a series, and we went through it divided over 3 evenings.
Plot
The New Legends of Monkey is a television series inspired by Monkey,
a Japanese production from the 1970s and 80s which garnered a cult
following in New Zealand, Australia, the U.K. and South Africa. The
Japanese production was based on the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West. The show is a co-production between ABC Me, TVNZ, and Netflix.
The new series follows a young monk, escorted by a group of gods, on a
journey across an ancient and fantastical land now ruled by evil demons
to collect lost scrolls of wisdom. In the meantime, demons are trying to stop her, as Monkey was the most fearsome warriors that protected the gods from their evil machinations, until he was entombed in stone due to their treacherous machinations...
What I liked about it
* If you grew up in my generation of Xena and Hercules, you will recognise the style of the series and the storytelling.
* Pigsy is hilarious, as is Monkey and his 500 year old out of time arrogance.
* Nimbus cloud!!!!
What I didn`t like about it
* It seems neither special effects nor acting where upped in the decennia since Xena or Hercules...
Lovely cheesy, this was a fun adventure. My initial thought was "what a heap of rubbish", yet for some reason I wanted to keep watching it.
An oddity, of which I still can`t say wether I loved or hated it...
