This BBC historical drama is based on the story by Alexander Dumas, and while I cringe every time they speak out the name of D'Artagnan "english wise", Noshi and me did enjoy this "lighter" sort of series.
Because make no mistake, while not historically accurate, it is a very enjoyable watch.
The story is well known, D`Artagnan is a farmer son who wants to join the King's musketeer regiment, and hooks up with the three best musketeers in the regiment. Athos, the swordsman, Aramis, the lover and sharpshooter, and Porthos, the imposing fysical warrior. Opposing them, as he works for France and not for his king per se, is Cardinal Richelieu, prime minister of France.
During this first season, we follow D'Artagnan as he tries to enter the ranks of the musketeers, while a mysterious woman known as "Milady" and who is an agent of the cardinal, opposes this, trying to sway him to the Cardinal's side. But D'Artagnan and his companions manage to overcome everything thrown at them for the protection of their King and Queen.
It was a very lovely series to watch, and of course compared to high production series like War and Peace or Netflix originals, this has some loopholes in the plot, and it all looks just that little bit "less" in working out of details and the likes. The same goes for the acting performance, who range wildly. While Richelieu (Capaldi at his best once again, I love his screen presence) or Aramis are truly well preformed, on the other hand is the King of France... who just doesn`t manage to come over well on screen. Add to that the occasional "to Avalon" roadsign or telephonemast in the background...
But still, we both had great fun watching this, with the occasional snigger and even laugh, and you know you have a fine series to bench.
Now, time to start season 2 this week...
