Top Gun: Maverick

 So, the legendary movie is back with a sequel after decades.

And it is a restounding success in the theatre's, which personally amazes me as most of the younger audience that goes to the movies wasn`t even born the time this cultural hit first came out.

Maverick is still in the Navy, being a testpilot and general pain-in-the-ass though highly decorated captain, refusing all chances on promotions.  One day, he is brought in for a very dangerous mission, having to teach some of the best young pilots coming out of the Top Gun programme.

A secret uranium deposit has to be destroyed, and the fly in and fly out routes are near suicide, but he takes on the job.  Amongst the recruits is Rooster, son of his former partner Goose, and the two men still share animosity on what happened.  Maverick can`t forgive himself, while Rooster still blames him for the accident he caused.  

In the meantime, he reconciles with Penny, an old girlfriend of him, and tries to find some peace to his inner turmoils as he trains the kids.  But they seemingly aren`t ready and the course can`t seem to be run as the mission approaches, so he steps in an F-18 himself, proving it can be done.

With Rooster as his wingman and two teams joining them, they go in and manage to destroy the deposit, but on their way out Maverick sacrifices his plain to save Rooster.  He in return goes in to save Maverick, leaving both of them stranded behind enemy lines, with top of the line modern fighter jets patrolling the area.  In order to escape, they steal the most gorgeous plane ever made: an F-14 Tomcat, even though it is a museum piece compared to their enemies.  Maverick manages to take two out, but as they are about to be shot down, another of his students, the arrogant Hangman, swoops in to save the day.

A truly good movie indeed, and it has so many nods and tributes to the first film.  Even the appearance of the seriously ill Val Kilmer is worked in perfectly, making this a true nostalgic film dressed in a modern day jacket!

Go watch this if your an 80s kid!  And take your children along to make them enjoy the thrill of Top Gun!
