Saintia Sho volume 7 - Masami Kurumada and Chimaki Kuori

With Saga seemingly returned, it is time for another action packed volume of the Saint Seiya spin-off series, Saintia Sho.

So let's read further, and especially enjoy all the things cut from the anime, of Shoko's quest to free her sister from Eris's influence.

As Eris's temple is on a collision course with Sanctuary, Aiolia engages the ressurected Saga.  One of the dryads of Eris, Ate, seems to no longer agree with her godess's will, jealous of how the former Saints seemingly are being favored.

They are informed though that Eris, more then Athena's, wants Shoko's head, and that divine powers through the golden apple are the reward for those that bring it to her.  While guarding Athena, Shoko is attacked by a mirror image of herself wearing a black version of her cloth.  As her cosmo awakens thanks to the protection of her sister, she defeats her, who turns out to be Madness Mania.

Ate attacks her in turn, but Aries Mu steps in, easily repelling the dryad.  He sends Shoko to the temple, relieving her of her watch.  Aiolia struggles at Saga who has become far more powerfull then before, but Scorpio Milo saves him.   In the meantime, Silver Saints Shield Ewan and Southern Cross Georg protect the innocents.

Shoko, joined by Cassiopeia Elda, advances inside the temple until they come face to face with another fallen Saint, Orion Rigel.   Shoko agrees that he takes her to her sister, as Milo and Aiolia together engage the being that was once Saga.

And so with Shoko before the gate leading to Eris, it's time to wait to read the next volume and see how the story will progress, as we are nearing the end of the anime as well now.

Saintia Sho volume 6 - Masami Kurumada and Chimaki Kuori

Time for some more burning cosmo reading!

Picking up where we left in volume 5, when Skok's sister was selected to merge with Eris, the goddess of discord is gathering her powers to re-enter the stage.

At the abyss, Shoko is being pulled in to meet with her sister Kyoko, now fully merged with the spirit of Eris.  Kyoko tells her the world will soon be destroyed, and she wants her sister to join her in the paradise she is creating with the Tree of Life.  But Shoko refuses, unwilling to believe her sister is completely gone, and vowing she will save her from Eris.  Eris tries to trap her, but Scorpion Milo arrives together with Athena, forcing Eris to withdraw.

In the meantime in Eris's temple, Aiolia has infiltrated the place.  The golden Lion makes smooth headway towards it's centre, as Milo also starts to enter the temple, leaving Shoko behind to protect Athena.  Peacock Mayura contacts them, telling that she suspects that Mii and Xiaoling are caught inside, being swept into the temple when it formed.

Aiolia breaks through the gate harboring a strong, evil cosmos, suddenly finding himself in the late Gold saint Saga's Another Dimension.  But it isn't the Gemini saint that meets him, but his deceased brother, Sagitarrius Aiolos.  He mocks the golden lion for how weak he is, before changing appearances to a mirror image of Aiolia.

Mii awakens in the temple, faved by Malice Emony, who has grown since the previous encounter where the Dolphin saint defeated her.  Stronger then before, she captures Mii in her Lunatic Bind attack, but Katya interferes.  Mii gets up, sending the ice saintia on her way to face Emony herself.  Strenghtened by her vows to Athena, she makes short work of the bratty ghost warrior, before collapsing from her sustained injuries.

Aiolia sees the true face of his opponent, the evil side of Saga that has been ressurected and who has his own personal goals, using Eris's offer as a means to reach those goals.  They engage in battle, as lower dryad warriors arrive at Sanctuary to capture it.  They are swiftly defeated by Jabu and the other bronze saints, Shaina, Aldebaran and Shaka.

And so this volume ends, the pieces being set in motion for the battle between Athena and Eris, with Shoko still being held back as the ace-in-the-hole versus Eris's host Kyoko.

Saintia Sho volume 5 - Masami Kurumada and Chimaki Kuori

Time to get to the next instalment of Saintia Sho!

And with Athena brought before Saga, as she was captured by Aphrodite at the end of volume 4, the truth behind Sanctuary might be revealed!

Here she is met by a Saga in total duality, as his sane side begs her to kill him, while his evil side threatens her not to approach him, but she can`t bring herself to deliver the strike. But before his evil side can attack her, his good side sweeps her away through Another Dimension, where Aphrodite delivers her back at the mansion.  In the arena, Katya reveals it was all part of the plan, and that she is actually loyal to Saori, instructing both silver saints to protect her as well.

While still in the hospital recovering, Shoko is visited by Aquila Marin.  She brings the grave news that Saint's Academy, where aspiring saintia are trained, has been destroyed by Cancer Deathmask.  Cassopeia Elda, one of the saintia's that is present, engages him but is no match for the gold saint.  He brings her to the mouth of the Underworld, where he reveals that Eris's followers still lurk around, and wanted to posses the bodies of the students, so killing them all was the fastest way to stop him.  Enraged by his cruel methods, Elda is left behind frustrated in the ruins of the academy.

In the meantime Saori sends the other saintia's to train with Marin, in order that they get more powerful for the battle to come, while the pope gathers the gold saints to put Sanctuary on full alert.  As the battle for Sanctuary is about to begin, Mayura meets with the trained saintia's near the ruins of Eris's temple, where evil souls are flocking.

As Athena is struck by the golden arrow, the battle has now begun in earnest and Seiya and his friends fight their way to the Pope's room.  Here Seiya overcomes Saga and saves Athena, but when she later confronts him, he kills himself in shame of what he had done, his evil side driven out by the light of Athena's shield... but it seems this side is ressurected at the ruins where the others wait.

And so the fifth volume ends, and we are already near the end of the (sadly only one season made) anime.  Considering there are 18 volumes in total, that means there is still a lot to discover for me in this series, and I'll happily read along!

Saintia Sho volume 4 - Masami Kurumada and Chimaki Kuori

So, time for some french reading this time round, as the volumes are either difficult to find, or sheer ridicilous in price, for the english tomes.

Guess that's a benefit of being belgian then...

We ended volume 3 with the threat of Eris being overcome thanks to Scorpio Milo, but something bigger looms behind the scenes.  While Xiao-ling receives her cloth of Ursa Minor, Saori goes to visit Shoko in the hospital at the eve of the Galactic Wars tournament.  Here she tells her she no longer needs to fight for her, and says her farewells to Shoko, as she tells her the tournament is a rouse to pull out a bigger evil out of the shadows.

She confers with Mi about this, telling her that Shoko suffered to much pain with the two-times loss of her sister Kyoko to be clear of mind to fight for the peace on Earth, just as Xiao-ling arrives at the mansion.  Sanctuary has heard of the Galactic Wars tournament, and send agents to stop it, with Silver Saints Yuan of Scutum and Georg of Southern Cross, together with one of the saintia, Katia of Corona Borealis.

Outside the hospital, Shoko meets Seiya, the Pegasus saint, who tells her he fights to find his lost sister back.  She attends the tournament, seeing him win (his epic) battle against Shiryu of Dragon.  As Katia and the Silver Saints arrive in Japan, they go to the Colloseum where they confront Saori and her maidens Xiao-ling and Mii.  Xiao-ling quickly attacks Katia, but proves no match for the ice saintia, and is quickly frozen in the spot.  As she explains to Saori her loyalty to the Grand Pope comes from him saving her life, she challenges her to show her cosmo, but still recovering from the fight with Eris Saori is unable to.

Shoko intervenes, having decided that she will put her life on the line to defend Athena at all costs, like she did for her.  She blocks Katia's attack, but as she wants to retaliate the Silver Saints step in, having far greater power then Shoko.  But just as they are about to attack, Saori and the girls are whisked away thankt to Peacock Mayura, the blind woman that trained Shoko before and the strongest of the female saints.  She easily brushes the other Silver saints aside, as in anctuary the Grand Pope has a bout of inner turmoil.

Shoko needs to restart her training as her cloth is being restored, as she is told the story of the struggle between Athena and the Grand Pope, but as they are about to return to the city, Pisces Aphrodite arrives to take Athena back to Sanctuary.  Awakening there, she is met by a crying Grand Pope at her side...

So that was a volume with a lot of explanation, especially if you haven`t seen the original OR the Saintia Sho animes, this clears up already a lot of things, without the major plot twist being revealed yet.

Unboxing Saint Cosmo Memoir Seiya

The latest addition to my Saint Seiya collection, this was another figure won over at the TokyoCatch crane game app.

So when it arrived, I went to unbox it of course, so let's have a look at the little video clip.

I love his uniform, albeit it only featured briefly in the series (basically, only in the first half of the first episode) before he changed to his traditional blue jeans and red shirt outfit, yet that training styled figure has something, I don`t know how to say it, powerfull about it.

So, probably one of the last figures of the year to be honest, as I have nothing lined up beyond him in pre-orders for now.  Though you never know what the gacha gods might throw in my lap...

Unboxing Funko POP 808 Cygnus Hyoga

A while ago, when strolling in the Wijnegem Shopping Center, we visited the 4 Geeks store located there.

And Noshi bought me Hyoga, one of the Saint Seiya Funko POP's I still missed for my collection, which is a bit scandalous as he is "my" childhood Saint.

Now, I`m not that huge a fan of Funko POP as you all know, but this is a series I just need to complete, so every now and then I`ll be picking them up to fill out for example the My Box system every month.

Surely, it's only Funk POP, but still, a collector has to collect.  It's stronger then ourselves...

Saint Seiya Time Odyssey volume 1 - Jerome Alquie and Arnaud Dollen

Based on (and approved by) the oeuvre of Masami Kurumada comes this new, french written and drawn, story of Saint Seiya.

Being european though, it comes in "BD" (bande dessinee) format instead of manga, and is full colour.

The story, centered around Phoenix Ikki, takes place between the battle with the Silver Saints and the assault on Sanctuary. The bronze saints are recovering at the Grade Foundation mansion, when Drachme, a warrior of an unknown deity, appears.  Brushing aside the present bronze saints initially due to his high speed attack, he declares he is searching for the Phoenix saint.  Harmonizing with the golden cloth helmet, Seiya defeats him, but his master, Arctos of Kelpie, appears.  He tells them his master is only out to kill Phoenix Ikki and appologises to the others, claiming his master has no quarrel with Athena.

Both Athena and the Old Master deduct that Chronos has entered the fray.  Ikki, on the isle of Kanon, is ambushed by the three mistresses of Fate, who reveal to him how his life, and that of his former master Guilty, has been influenced by their lord.  Ikki defeats them, but in going so alters fate as he was originally destined to become Hades's vessel, a fate now transferred to his brother Shun.

Chronos has succeeded in his mission preventing the Phoenix to one day become the incarnation of Hades, but Zeus betrays him.  He reveals the clock of the Apocalypse as a result, swearing to wipe everything out instead to get his revenge on the Olympians...

A very intresting read for sure, a lovely drawn, this is recommended for all Saint Seiya fans!

Unboxing FunkoPOP Saint Seiya Glow in the Dark Ikki

Okay, so just like Qposket's, I`m nott hat huge a fan of FunkoPOP figures, but there is that Saint Seiya line.

And it contains two specials.  I have Sagitarrius, but now I obtained the glow in the dark special version of Phoenix Ikki as well.

Found over at Archonia for 18 euro, I didn`t want to pass that up, and I will be adding the remaining ones I`m missing to my monthly boxes now and then, but this one was a no brainer to grab.

So let's have a look at the figure.

There we go, three down of the line, 4 more to go to collect.

Unboxing Saint Seiya Cosmo Memoir Kanon of Sea Dragon

The latest arrival from TokyoCatch, this is another figure in the Cosmo Memoir series of Saint Seiya.

And it is none other then Kanon, the twin brother of Gemini Saga and the one responsible for the (to early) awakening of Poseidon and his Marina Generals.

Under the guise of the Sea Dragon general, he orchestrated the whole battle, before redeeming himself in the Hades arc.

A pretty nifty figure, love the hair and how it is sculpted.

See you for the next unboxing!

Saintia Sho volume 3 - Masami Kuramada

The third volume of this series, which btw animated was quite good yet still not received a second season.

And it follows more of the female saint handmaiden's of Athena, the Saintias.

During the face off with Eris, Athena comes to the help of Shoko to reach a stalemate.  But as Eris flees, she pulls Shoko to her lair with her, resulting in the untrained saint being held captive by the dryad Murder Phobos.

She is rescued by the saint send to Eris's sanctuary to assassinate her, Gold saint Scorpio Milo.  he quickly makes short work of Phobos and larer Ate, as he advances to the place where Eris slumbers.  Here he is held back by a fallen Silver saint, Orion Rigel.  He fights not for Eris, but with the resolve to protect her host, Shoko's sister and the woman he loves, Kyoko.

Shoko arrives as Milo defeats Rigel and stop him.  This allows Shoko one last chance to reach out to her sister and try to save her, but the battle has caused Eris to awaken.  Milo is forced as such to defeat her, wiping away Kyoko's cosmo as well in the process.

An action packed volume, focussing mostly on the raw might of a Gold saint.  The manga now stands at the point of the Galaxian Wars, where the original series began.  Let's see when we get volume four how it continues, as with 3 fully dedicated volumes the prelude is already far more detailed then it was in the anime itself.

Unboxing Saint Seiya Cosmo Memoir Mu of Jamir

A recent win from TokyoCatch, the Cosmo Memoir model of Mu of Jamir, the gold Aries saint, is now in my possession wiiiej.

And in this short video, we are taking a look at the warrior blessed with the skills to repair other clothes, but who is as much a fearsome warrior himself!

A pretty neat figure all in all, and I still hope they will do the whole line eventually (Hyoga!  Deathmask!!!) but I guess that will be a case of wait and see...

I just haven`t figured out the whole standpole thing though... even now, after taping the clip.

Dual Unboxing Saint Seiya Appendix Busts

In today's unboxing video, a really cool find from over at Ami Ami: two Saint Seiya appendix busts.

Noshi spotted them for me on their second hand section, and both where A / A+ items, aka as good as new.

And at about 10 euro each, a complete bargain!

So I unboxed them, with some fails lol, in this little video.

But in the end, a great looking addition to the collection!

Unboxing Cosmo Memoir Aiolia

While I have won quite a bit at various Crane Game apps, over at Cremas2 I only was succesfully once.

Well, twice in that I also caught a pack of ramen noodles, as I needed a second item to have this Saint Seiya model shipped.

But what a happy win it was, because it is a figure of my most beloved of anime series, ever since I first saw it in the ungodly long ago year of 1986...

The Cosmo Memoir is a range that is bringing out Saints figures of the characters unarmoured.  I also have Seiya from that line, and now the second one of the 5 released so far.

But without further ado, let's break open the seals and unbox the model!

Thanks for watching and see you next time!

Saintia Sho volume 2 - Masami Kurumada and Chimaki Kuori

The story continues, and it still is in the "anime adapted era" so not to much big reveals here.

Because they seemingly literally out the manga to anime form, which isn`t a bad thing mind you.

The 4 chapters in this volume thread upon two paths: on the one hand there is Shoko, send out by Athena with the Equuleus cloth for a crash training with a mythical saint.  This should get her up to speed, at least to fight for the godess, in a shorter time then the other saintia's did.

The second arc mostly is the still awakening Athena who is troubled by her destiny, and the lives she might get lost, and already has lost, in order to preserve the peace from the gods who have less nobler intentions with Earth and it's population.

This leads up to the first confrontation between Eris and Athena, neither awakened to their full potential, as Shoko suddenly appears.  As Kyoko interferes with her host, the Equuleus cloth accepts Shoko as it's wearer...

Another nice volume, and I really can`t repeat myself enough, I adore the drawing style of this series.  Clear and full of action, everything a Saint series should be about!

Now to get myself the next volumes of the series!

Saintia Sho volume 1 - Masami Kurumada and Chimaki Kuori

The all female Saint Seiya series is finally being purchased and read by yours truly.

And while for the first few volumes I`ll have an idea of what will be happening, having watched the single season series so far, the story goes beyond that in the manga.

And like The Lost Canvas, that means I can finally find out what happened with Shoko and her companions!  The volume starts with Shoko having the same dream, as a golden apple wants to possess her, but she is saved by a golden armoured warrior (Scorpion saint Milo).  At school one day, she plans to confront Saori Kido, who as the head of the Grade Foundation might have news of her sister Kyoko that went to study there, when she gets attacked in the schoolyard.  A mysterious woman wants to sacrifice her to the golden apple indeed, but she is saved by her sister.  She has become a saintia of Athena, one of her bodyguard handmaidens, wearing the Equuleus bronze cloth.

The apple is actually the essence of Eris, who has chosen Shoko to become the vessel of her reincarnation. They return to the Kido mansion, but soon are attacked there by the Dryad Ate, the saintia's being pushed back as Athena, and the Sagitarrius gold cloth to support her, steps forward.  While Ate is defeated, she manages to snatch Kyoko instead for her to become the physical vessel of Eris.  Shoko begs Saori to receive training to become a saint, and save her sister...

So no real new reveals here, and the anime adapted this first volume very nicely.  And sorry mr Kurumada, but this drawing style personally is clearer then the original Saint Seiya series I`m afraid.

Now to go onwards to volume two...

Constellation Warriors try-out Battle Report

Awright, time to try out those Constellation Warriors rules I talked about yesterday with a mini-game!

Now, the rules recommed using the mapbook by PWorks, but I opted to use my dungeon tiles for a squares grid, and some of Nonsense Miniatures official models.  Aka, those I have painted up already...

As such, 2 bronze saints (Pegasus and Unicorn) will face off against the silver Sagitta saint.  That means in points values that Jabu will be the lowest rank, being Novice at 8 points, Seiya will be a Soldier at 16 points while Ptolemy will be an Expert costing 20 points.  A slight 4 point benefit for the Bronze saints, but heck, it is a try out...

In damage points there is a bit of a bigger difference though, as Jabu can take 7, Seiya 8 and Ptolemy only 10 hits though if I read the rules correctly (see below), so it will come down for the Silver saint to try and use his abilities to good use.  But hey, Silver saints aren`t expected to win now are they?  Now to grab 6 dice, 3 in each colour, for the game, and let's see how it goes.

I was asked to give some feedback on issues and such should I come across, or some thingies that might need a bit of clarification, so I`ll do that of course, marking them in italics in the battle report. Also, for my game stats, I am the bronze player for this solo game.

About the Speed stat issue in damage allocation I talked about in yesterday's post, I talked to the creator in the meantime and it is indeed the choice of which to reduce first, so you can knock off Speed AND ATT before a model gets knocked out.

Deployment

The board was made with dungeon tiles I printed, and some scenery from various sources added to make it look like an old greek ruin, where the series often took place.  The small dice where the required markers, though I was a bit confused on how to place them.  The text states a 6 square central zone, so I pressume it is the band indicated in the diagram, being rather rectangular as such.  I admit I have no idea how big the squares of the suggested PWorks book are, so this might be a battlefield a bit to big...

Fluff in mind, I also decided that Jabu would not have any access to ranged attacks, as he only has a hypnosis like ability in the anime, as well as the Unicorn Gallop.  Seiya and Ptolemy both have ranged main attacks in the anime, so they'll be able to make ranged attacks in this try-out game, even though normally it can only be one quarter of your group that can have them.

The First Turn

Well, the game began with the bronze saints getting the high roll.  Seiya rushes forward, unleashing Pegasus Ryu Seiken as he closes on the silver saint.  Rolling two dice versus ptolemy's 4, the result was two 6's for Seiya vs two 2's and two 3's for Ptolemy.  As the silver saint also has a ranged attack in this try out, that meant results 4-6 would have been applicable as well.  Seiya was doing 4 points of damage and gained 2 Cosmo, but Ptolemy stops 2 of them and also gains 2 Cosmo.  Never the less, first blood to the Bronze saints.

In retaliation, Ptolemy spend his 4 Cosmo to use the "Swift Shooter" ability.  This allows him to fire twice (with no ATT loss for range or moving!) at Seiya, who can defend with 3 ATT instead of 2 now though.  The first salvo goes bad, as Seiya suffers a single wound and Ptolemy gaining one cosmo, but Seiya's counter hits the silver saint for 3 damage and giving him a cosmo point as well.  With his silver armour shattered and a Speed point knocked of, he unleashes his second volley.
And it is a devastating one!  Three 6's and a 4 means Ptolemy gains 3 cosmo points and does no less then 7 damage points on the Pegasus saint.  Seiya counters with two 1's, blocking 2 damage, and a 4 for an additional point on the Sagitta saint.  But the bronze saint sees his armour vaporized, and both his Speed and ATT drop to one, meaning he is on the verge of being knocked out, while Ptolemy loses a point of ATT.
Jabu rushes to Seiya's aid, but as he doesn`t have a ranged attack, the turn ends there.

Turn Two

As this little try out is turning out to be brutal, being played with about a third of the intended points for small games, this might even prove to be the final turn already.  So far, no victory points where scored, but this turn might change that quickly, with one bronze saint in tatters, the other lower in ability, and the Silver saint more or less okay with a heap of Cosmo stored.  it ptolemy would get the first turn, he could use Swift Shooter again, and this could decimate the bronzes, as Jabu has no retaliation against ranged attacks and still needs to close the gap...

But luck favours the warriors of Athena, and Jabu closes the range and attacks, Using the Reckless Rush ability, to simulate his Unicorn Gallop, he takes one damage but adds two dice to his attack roll.  Jabu scores 1, 1, 3, 5 versus Ptolemy's 2, 5 and 6.  Comparing the results, Jabu does a single point of damage, which is blocked, and gains 1 cosmo.  The silver saint hits back with 3 points of damage, of which 2 are stopped, and gains 1 cosmo as well.  The Unicorn has been blocked, and now the Sagita saint can hit back!  Rolling 4 dice against the 2 of Jabu, he uses the Jump Back ability meaning he will get back 2 squares after the attack without suffering an attack of opportunity, and widen the range to Seiya for a ranged attack!  Jabu manages to avoid 1 of 2 points of damage and gain a cosmo, while Ptolemy recovers his spend point.

The gravely injured Seiya moves a bit backward, as he can`t fire at Ptolemy due to Jabu blocking his Line of Sight, so opts to go stand on a marker instead.  This results in him having +1 ATT in the next turn and score the first victory point of the game, 1-0 to the bronze saints so far.

Turn Three

Both bronze saints are in a hard place, but retain the initiative.  In desperation, Jabu charges again, spending 1 Cosmo point to re-roll a single attack dice.  Which is waited with a 5 and a 6 on his roll, though it does recover his spend point that way.  Ptolemy gets a 1, 2 and 4, meaning he blocks 2 of the three damage points and gains a cosmo point, as well as causing another wound on the surprisingly resilient Unicorn saint.  But all warriors are now down to 1 Speed...
In his turn, Ptolemy uses his 3 actions to get three re-rolls on the attack dice for 3 cosmo, but again it's a wasted purchase as he scores a 4 and two 6's.  Jabu on the other hand gets two 5's, so neither is blocking anything and a whole lot of damage is dealt.  Ptolemy suffers two points, bringing his ATT to a measly 1, but regains two cosmo.  Poor Jabu though gets hit for no less then 5 damage, taking him out of the game and scoring 8 points for the Silver saint.

While looking grim, this means the bronze saints suddenly have a slight advantage, as seiya spends 6 cosmo in his turn to use Heal.  At 3 points each, he regains 2 ATT and 2 SPEED, then moves forward to Ptolemy and unleashing a desperate ranged attack of 2 dice versus Ptolemy's one...

Scoring a 3 and a 4 versus the silver saints 1, it only results in both gaining a Cosmo point, and the turn ends 1 - 8 in the Silver saint's favour.

Turn Four

Unless divine powers intervene, this is going to be the final turn.  Ptolemy must hope to get the initiative to be able to heal up and then attack Seiya, otherwise the bronze saint is likely to finish him off, as he can add cosmo points to get re-rolls.  And with a 5 to a 3, Seiya keeps the initiative and charges in, armed with 3 dice versus 1, and 2 re-rolls.  With two 5's and a 2 versus a single 5, Seiya knocks the Silver Saint of his feet, and suffers no damage in return, ending the game!  Scoring 20 points for the Sagitta saint, as well as 5 extra for eliminating the opponent, the final tally stands at 26 vs 8!

Okay, so that was a fitting, anime kind of true, end of the small playtest game!

Conclusion

These rules are brutal, and especially the abilities can have huge impacts, I was severly impressed by both Heal and the Swift Shooter ability.  The rate you gain Cosmo points with, makes it possible to, especcially from turn 2 onwards, use these to the greatest advantage without having to micromanage your powers to much.  Initially, it looked very grave for the bronze saints, but they managed to claw back due to this, and it came down to the initiative rolls of the final two turns to see if the Silver saint could follow through on his initial massacre.  Failing this, it meant one of the bronzes could recover and move in for the victory, but it could have been totally the other way around instead.

The rules, for me, now that I tried them, have a good pace and anime feel to them, but I guess I`ll have to see what if is going to give once full point sized bands are going to be used, and the power of the Gold saints come in to play with their 4 abilities allowance...

But for a first go, I really liked this little free gameset.

Constellation Warriors

Constellation Warriors: a free ruleset to play Saint Seiya games, using Nonsense Miniatures range and found HERE (it's under the Dark Rain ruleset, click the pic and go to Downloads).

So of course I needed to have a look at them, and as I`m collecting the range, a solo game try-out will be posted tomorrow.

But let's have a look at the ruleset, counting a nice and modest 5 pages, first.  Games are planned to last 10 turns, and both players make up teams using a points value.  Every turn has 2 phases, one in which a player makes his actions, and one where the maintenance of the forces is done.

An action consists in either move and action, or action and move, and as he gains Cosmo energy, his attack pool (ATT) increases.  When attacks are carried out, the result is compared and this gives the damage (if any) caused on a model and if any additional Cosmo can be gained.  Damage itself is divided by lowering statistics, and once the ATT value reaches 0, the model is knocked out of the game.

This is where I think there is an odd thing in the rules.  A character is knocked out at ATT 0, and damage distribution states first armor, the ATT and then Speed are lowered.  So in effect, Speed never drops due to damage as it comes after ATT which takes out a model upon reaching 0.

Cosmo on the other hand can be used to activate a variety of abilities, like re-rolls, pushes and the likes, and each comes with a different cost.
Apart from knocking your opponents models out, there are some variable victory points to be obtained as well, and the player with the highest tally at the end of the 10 turns wins the game.

A fairly nice little ruleset at first glance, allowing for fast, cinematic games using Saint Seiya figures.  I even think this might be something for a club opendoor demo or small show even, and that's something I`ll definitly be looking at in the near future.

Now to give the rules a go, and I`ll upload the battle report of that first try-out tomorrow!

Unicorn Jabu

The latest model of the Constellation Warriors line by Nonsense Miniatures I finished painting, is a personal favorite saint of mine, Unicorn Jabu.

Hotheaded and fiercely loyal to Athena, he is the childhood rival of Seiya in vying for her attention.

So if you watched the original anime, it is a bit of a suprise he didn`t become one of the original antagonists, as all the pointers where there that he would be a mainline character in the first episodes.  Instead, he becomes the leader of the second group of Athena's bronze saints, who while having their moments (protecting Athena after she had fallen at Sanctuary, or Seiya's sister in the Hades arc), never got out of the shadows.

The model itself is cast in resin and nicely detailed.  I especially love the flowing hair on him, nicely sculpted and casted, though at the cost of him not becoming the helmeted version as seen in most of the anime.  His manga counterpart, as well as his Lost Canvas ancestor Yato, wear this style of headcover though, so it's fine.

Unicorn Gallop!

Unboxing FunkoPop Sagittarius Seiya

In today's unbxing post, I'm taking a look at the limited edition figure of Seiya, wearing the gold Sagittarius cloth.

Because normally I'm to late grabbing limited editions, meaning I have to pay far more then their original price to obtain them.

Not so this time with the Saint Seiya line, and even though I still need to order the 5 regular ones (I have low hopes finding the chase glow in the dark model of Ikki), I grabbed asap from Archonia for the collection.

Now, at first when they started to come out, FunkoPop didn't really do it for me, the big head vinyl models where not my cup of tea.  This changed though when seeing (and obtaining) the line from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and they grew on me ever since.  Let's say the Saint Seiya line won't be the last ones I'll be getting over the years to come...

The model comes in the traditional FunkoPOP boxing, with the limited edition markings added to it.

Opening the box, Seiya is held in place in a plastic clamshell, that opens top and bottom to protect the paintjob from pulling out the mode.

The POP is nicely detailed, with the markings on the bow even added, while it has tiny wings from the cloth as well.

Definitly a good looking model, and one I`ll be displaying with pleasure in my cabinets. Like I said, at first when they came into existence, I wasn't wild about FunkoPOP's, but models like this have definitly kindled my adoration for them!
