Finally, since changing jobs the start of january, I managed to get to my regular game group for some casual games.
And that will be needed, as I'm taking Cyreni's Razors to both tournaments I attend in june, and wanted to try out my Cataclysm / Wrack combination build, dubbed Wracking Tides.
The purpose tonight, mostly to get a feel for the deck and learn it's "flow", and my victim was Peter for this. He faced me in the first game with Da Kinnin Krew, using a deck combination of Pillage and Plunder together with Edge of the Knife.
I got to place the board, opting for a "nines" set-up, and the warbands deployed. I set up in such a way I could target two enemies from the off-set with Hammertide.
His leader immediatly fled as he had first turn, staggering himself to start delving.
Gikkit in the meantime fell victim to Cephanyr, the octupus moving to neutral territory to strangle the little gobbo in it's tentacles.
Torka charged forward to avenge their little friend, damaging Cephanyr, but he pinged the Orruk using his Rock-Splitting Tread, and kept the card to boot.
The round ended with a 7 lead for Cyreni against 2 scored glory for the Krew, as my Cataclysm tracker advanced.
For the second round, Cephanyr was inspired, as was Alathyrr.
Cephanyr was attacked, but the attack failed and he inked himself away from Mannok, and towards the gobbo and hobgrot in the back.
Alathyrr swirled his glaive around, putting Torka down with precise and swift strokes, teh lumbering brute unable to parry the whirlwind attack.
Krookgrin fled in the back, as a failed attack on Cephanyr allowed the beast to encircle poor Shank as the Hobgrot moved away. Luckily for Shanks, 4 dice attacks weren't my thing this evening, and he missed spectacularly.
Shanks bravely retaliated, pushing the big beast away from his tiny posture...
Cephanyr then charged on the Hobgrot, and thanks to the bloke being staggered he managed a single success... which came through and slayed the knifestabber. The second round came to an end, and the Razors had a comfortable lead of 11 versus 7 for the Krew, but also now outnumbered the Orruk warband.
The third round had Cyreni now drawing a line on Mannok, thanks to her wary thread upgrade.
Mannok attacked Cephanyr, wounding the beast some more (long live damage reduction) but it still bravely held on...
... only to get a move token as a thanks for doing so. Alathyrr however had snuck behind the Orruk leader, and hit him for two damage.
Enraged by this, he finally took his vengeance on Cephanyr, the squid finally succumbing to the violence of the Orruk warband's leader attacks.
Cyreni charged Mannok, her ranged attack pushing him one back but not doing damage.
In response, Mannok charged on her as well, wounding her and pushing her off the objective which Peter was eyeing.
I knew Strip the Realm was coming up, so Alathyrr threw himself between his leader and the Orruk, not only to defend her by forcing Peter to chose to risk putting her down for glory, or try and get the undamaged thrall of the objective.
Unfortunatly, while he wounded the thrall, he couldn't shift him and as a result the first game ended with an 18 glory to 10 glory victory for Cyreni. Which in our groups WhatsApp we made 28-10, because we had agreed beforehand to count 10 glory extra to the first game winner's total, to make the people who chose their wife above me sweat a bit on what I had brewn...
So we moved on to a second game, and this time those big lizards of the Jaws of Itzl came out to play, armed with an Emberstone Sentinel / Blazing Assault combo.
So that was bigger beasts to cope with now, and in addition they hit hard. Peter got to chose the board unfortunatly, but I opted to place my tokens near the middle to force his objective grabbing to be within range of my reach attacks most of the time, and so that I could cover the area better with my good move rating and movement trickery.
The Razors kicked off the game, a Hammertide immediatly pinging his leader from the get go. Sadly my initial target, the little snakes, to get that numerical advantage immediatly and control his movement a bit better, where placed last so I couldn't put Cyreni on a line for them.
Cephanyr rushed in, and luckily hit with his attacks being inspired and having a re-roll. And this was the last time in the evening I hit anything with a 4 dice+ attack...
The beast was wounded back in return, while another Seraphon was bunkering in on the neutral territory objective.
But Kro-Jax couldn't be saved, as he was summarily executed by Alathyrr and scoring me some solid glory to get going this game, not to mention take away a serious thread!
Cephanyr though couldn't repeat his dashing around like in the first game, and he was swiftly eliminated from the battlefield.
The first round ended with a lead for the Razors, as the glory count stated 9 versus 5 for the Jaws.
The situation looked good for the second round, as Cyreni was lined up perfectly to either bring Ro-Tak to his last wound, or eliminate the Venomites, even if I didn't have the first turn.
But I got it, and the little snakes where taken out, meaning my thralls could now start dancing and stabbing at the big lizard, while Cyreni could circle and try to pounce if needed.
Alathyrr was wounded and pushed back into a stagger hex, but he was still in range to strike himself.
He hit the lizard, but a critical defence made it so he still had a single wound left. Charging in on the thrall, he wounded him before fleeing using Illusionary Fighter.
The other seraphon then charged in, and poor Alathyrr fell.
This caused Renglaith to move onto the objective to occupy it for any possible objectives Peter might have had, working around the neutral territory or the likes.
The second round ended, and while both warbands only had two remaining warriors, the glory tally was strongly in favor of the Razors, 14 versus 7.
The third round began with Renglaith assaulting Ro-Tak, but failing to hit him.
So-Kar joined the melee, as did Cyreni, and a clash of ancient bronze weapons and fine aelven steel began.
But it was an eldritch power that decided the battle there, as a bolt from Cyreni blasted down the lizard that had been holding strong all the time.
A rush to objectives and objective denials began, and as the final cards had been scored, a strong 20-9 victory for the Razors was on the table.
So I think this deck actually worked above my expectations. I build it to go with the synergies of both Hammertide and the warscrolls and fighter cards, but this evening it performed really well, with the draws coming good. Surely, the attacks didn't went as well as I wished, but with 4 dice on swords you can safely expect to have at least one or two hits per strike, but it was not to be on that part.
But yes, I'm feeling confident in piloting this deck, and it will be my go to warband build for both the tourneys in june, namely Mines of Alost II and Benelux Clash III. We'll just have to see what they manage to do there in the end.
