Boats. Booze. Blood. Breasts. Yup, it`s a Pirate show alright!
The first season of the series, containing 8 episodes of one hour, introduces us to Captain Flint and his (near obsessive) hunt for the Urca de Lima, a spanish treasure galleon.
While the series includes `real` pirates brought into the fray like Anne Bonny, Benjamin Hornigold, Jack Rakham, Charles Vane, Ned Low and Blackbeard, the series is actually a prequel to Treasure Island, the novel by R. L. Stevenson.
With a very good theme music by Bear McCready (Battlestar Galactica), it is an intense series featuring the pirate life on Nassau, as they try to fence their prizes, while a suddering competition between Flint and the fencing master Eleanor Guthrie on the one hand, and Captain Vane on the other hand, adds intrigue to the setting.
All the while preparing for the chase on the Urca... and with John Silver playing a very intriguing role and gradually gaining the faith of the captain as others try to usurp his position.
The final moments of the first season, when a spanish Man-O-War faces off his 100 gun battery against the two small pirate ships is perhaps the most tense moment of any recent series, as you can see the desperation and fear in the whole crew of the Walrus, Flint`s boat, knowing their plan had failed and this behemoth would be delivering righteous fury.
A real must see!
