On Tour to the Frituur 15: Frituur no 1 in Antwerp

Perhaps the most legenday frituur in the whole of Antwerp by reputation, Firtuur no 1 is an icon.

But is it also any good?  Well, that is something I went and found out...

Located at the Hoogstraat number 1 in Antwerp's historical city centre, it is also a legend with Maria, the lady behind the counter.  While it doesn't have a website, a quick google will find you a lot of articles both about the frituur as well as about Maria.

The selection is on par (their beefstew, while not in this test, is really delicious) and there is more then ample seating with two dining rooms.

My order

I ordered a small fries with spices, a berepoot and tartare sauce, the regular in other words in this test series.  Now, the tartare isn't fresh made, and instead of coming in a small pot, is put directly on the fries, which I'm not to much a fan off as I can't dip the meat in it then.  Also, in all the fun talks, they did mix the order up, and I ended with Joppie instead of tartare on the fries.  The fries itself where perfectly bakes, as was the berepoot, but the place does know it's prices, knocking me back 10.40 euro.  This as such is the first time in the series a nice pink eurobill wasn't sufficient for a lunch.

Conclusion

While the food is perfectly fine, the prices are on the more expensive side.  As you can scroll back in the series, there are two other rather famous Antwerp places (Fritkot Max and Frituur 't Stad) who offer the same quality, yet where more then a full euro cheaper and had fresh tartare.

For that reason, I can't score the icon unfortunatly higher then a 6 out of 10.  It has atmosphere, it has taste, but it also has a steep price at 1.20 euro for a pumping of sauce for example.
