The Sea Beast

Lazy sunday family film time, and The Sea Beast was the one that got picked.

Starring Karl Urban, this has become Netflix's most watched animation film to date, so with good hopes we jumped in.

For centuries, big sea monsters have been wrecking havoc against sailing ships, and in response specialised Hunters have ventured out to take them down.  Led by Captain Crow, the most succesfull ship is the Inevitable, on which his adopted son Jacob Holland also sails.  They are backed by the king and queen of The Crown, from their society Three Bridges.

Once Captain Crow would take down a big red monster that took his eye years ago, Red Bluster, he will have his son succeed him, but upon returning to Three Bridges they learn that the Navy, with the ship Imperator of admiral Hornagold, will take their place.  A challenge is declared between both vessels to take down Red Bluster.

As the Inevitable departs, they discover a stowaway, the young orphan girl Maisie.  When they find the beast, the vessel is in danger of being pulled under, and Jacob, instigated by Maisie, cuts the rope saving the crew but letting the beast get away.  They are held at gunpoint as the beast returns and swallows them both.  Taking them to an island populated with other beasts, Maisie discovers that Red is not malicious and befriends it, together with a tiny beast she names Blue (because, well, it's blue).

Jacob and Maisie convince the beast to take them back to Rum Pepper Island, while Crow strucks a deal with the hag Batterbie, who gives him a harpoon that can kill it.  The beast, arriving at Rum Pepper Island, attack the Imperator after being shot at, but Jacob prevents it from killing Hornagold.  As Inevitable appears, Red is hit by the spear and nearly dies, but Maisie nurses it back to health.

They are brought back to Three Bridges, but when facing the Crown, Maisie reveals a truth she deducted: that their history has been forged to favour good trade, and that the monsters aren't evil in intentions at all.  As Red is freed, they Crown has to flee and the kingdom renounce their beliefs.  With the beasts now left in peace, Maisie, Jacob and Blue start a new life as a family.

Okay, this was a good movie, and gorgeously animated.  Make sure to check it out with the kids (or without, you will still enjoy it) as you won`t regret the time spend watching this pirate / monster adventure at all.
