Free Guy

Imagine a comedy version of a cross between Ready Player One and The Matrix, and you sort of get this movie I guess.

While it gets weird at the beginning, it is a fun movie of which a sequel is apparently in the works.

Guy is your run of the mill, well, guy.  Everyday the same routine as he goes to his job as a bank clerk, but when he sees a mysterious girl he just knows she is the woman of his dreams.  But following her, he gets killed by a train... only to have it all start over again.

It turns out Guy is an NPC in the videogame Free City, and one day he accidentally gets in possession of sunglasses that let him see the items and quests of players.  After he talks with the girl, who is actually the developper of a game called Life Itself, he decides to do good and level up to learn the truth.

That truth is that in our world, the AI behind the game was stolen by Antwan, a ruthless game developper that used it to create the hit game Free City.  He is now rushing everyone to get Free City 2 ready, one that will not port the players and NPC's of the original game.  Keys, the partner of the developper girl Millie for Life Itself, works for him, but he starts to figure out there is more to Guy then a coding error.

They decide all three of them to find the evidence in the game that Antwan did steal the technology, but as they near their goal Antwan decides to start purging the servers.  This results in the world slowly starting to degrade, and even with the immense popularity of Guy, aka "Blue Shirt Guy" at stake, the crowd isn't happy for this.  Millie and Keys manage to broker a deal with him to get the Life Itself interface back in exchange for dropping the lawsuit towards Free City.

Free City 2 comes online, but it is buggy and laggy, and the game flops greatly.  In the meantime, Guy and his friends live on in an indie released game called Life Itself, where Keys and Millie restored their living world, but without the GTA like violence of the Free City game...

An enjoyable saturday evening movie, and while I had to rewatch the last quarter the day after due to falling asleep, this wasn`t in any way due to the movie itself, but a busy day...
