Mortal Kombat

 Fight!  Flawless Victory!  FINISH HIM!

Heck, did I look forward to this movie, as it is a part of my childhood.  And I loved the 1995 incarnation.

The movie starts epic, with Bi-han (Sub Zero) assassinating Hanzo (Scorpion) and his family, but the bloodline is saved by Lord Raiden.  Centuries later, a young cage fighter, Cole Young, suddenly gets involved in a battle for the freedom of Earthrealm.

Together with other chosen champions, namely Jax, Liu Kang, Kung Lao and Kano and supported by Sonya Blade, they must face off a plot by Shang Tsung to assassinate them before the next tournament begins.

This leads to the betrayal of Kano to Outworld, but as he is later killed by Sonya she inherits his Dragon mark and allows her not only to release her inner power, but also join the ranks of champions.  Unfortunatly, their greatest hope Kung Lao falls in the battle.  With the help of a returning from hell Scorpion, they overcome the attackers, Sub Zero being the last to fall, and set out in search for new companions and prepare for Mortal Kombat.

Okay, so grapically an impressive movie, and seeing the old fatalities brought to the screen in all their gorey detail was cool, but the fact is, this is a thin movie.  It's basically the run up to a tournament, so hopefully a sequel will come with that actually happening.  There is no Johnny Cage (boo hiss) but in the closing scene there is hinted to his upcoming presence (hoozaaah), and quite a few characters from the game are now quite dead.

The new Cole guy is pretty lame, and to be honest, apart from the opening scenes and the Kano characters, this isn`t even a good movie, which is a bad thing.  It definitly can not stand up to the 1995 movie!

But heck, let's give it the benefit of the doubt and see where it will go from here on, IF there are going to be new instalments...
